Panasonic SL-SW895 Shockwave Portable CD Player with Brainshaker Headphones Review

This is the toughest CD player I've ever seen. If you drop it, it won't skip. To test this, I dropped it from a height of 3 feet onto an Army cot. It bounced twice, and didn't skip a beat. The anti-skip gets 5 stars.

The unit itself is metal, which doesnt sound like that big a difference until it's been subjected to 130+ degrees. The only downsides that I have seen from the unit itself is (1) my volume knob has some sand in it, so it's not 100%, and the "hold" switch, which has yet to fail me, seems poorly designed. The cherry on top is the waterproof feature, yes, it's waterproof, go ahead and spill anything on it; It's also sandproof, I haven't gotten any sand in the player in 2 months. 4 and a half stars for the player itself.

On to the headphones... This is the weakest point of the player. The headphones themselves are uncomfortable (not padded); any movement and they fall out, but forget about laying down with them on, they're built for maximum discomfort. The vibrating feature is novel, but after the bass "bulb" vibrates against the base of your neck for a while, you'll wish they had included a different set of headphones. -1 star for the headphones.

I've had varying degrees of success with using different headphones: My beat-up Sony earbuds work well; my JVC headphones (big DJ Style headphones) although bulky, have the best sound; the Kenwood earbuds I bought are junk.

Your mileage may vary, but with a different set of headphones, this is a great portable CD player, even if the harshest environment you encounter is sitting around the house. If you spend more time outside than in, this is the CD player for you. If you are going on an overseas deployment, this is a must have.

Maybe the other reviewers didn't get good items, but I found this item because I was actually looking to buy another one. I got two from officedepot and they both worked fine, though I gave one to my gf who gave it to her mom, so I don't know how much that one gets used, but mine gets used almost every day. I put my songs in a 4gb usb stick and put it in random. I have to do it every time I turn it on (it won't remember I put it in shuffle) but it's not the first mp3 players that I see doing this.
I barely move it, so I haven't put it to any tortunre tests. The quality is fine (though not the best). For the price, I overall like it.
It's still hard to find good cheap mp3 boomboxes, specially with usb port.

btw.. I didn't give it 5 stars, because it's not as smart as many other mp3 players.

Even though I love my Sony NW-HD3 20GB MP3 player, when I listen to my beloved classical music collection, I still much prefer CDs, since when it comes to sound quality, MP3 simply cannot match the original CD recording. This Sony CD player is great for classical music (as well as jazz and vocals, or anything that an audiophile loves). You can feed the output to a high-end amplifier and get unbeatable sound. Or use a good pair of headphones.

This CD/MP3 player is also great for books-on-CDs. Ripping CD audiobooks is a pain and a tedious process. So it's simply easier to listen to the CDs direcly, and this lightweight, stylish, easy-to-use CD player is just PERFECT for that. And it runs for days on a single AA battery. (Hint: get Panasonic's new Oxyride AA batteries for double the life of even the best alkalines.)

I just love this portable CD player. If you are also an audiophile or an audiobook lover, this is perfect for your needs.

The only minor gripe is the player doesn't support WMA, which would have been even more fantastic for ripped audiobooks (better quality, smaller files). MP3 still takes too much space at the usual 128kbps bitrate. If I were to rip, I'd want to rip into 48kbps WMA and would still get great sound quality. (But I don't have the patience to rip anyway...)

BTW, this player (and the black version) are actually cheaper on Sony's consumer website, sonystyle dot com, where it sells for .95. I should have checked there first.

UPDATE: I was happy to discover that the inline remote control that comes with the D-NE320 also works on my Sony NW-HD3 20GB MP3 player. Awesome!

Replacing a Stock Radio in a Ford Taurus 2002 SEL

So my friend and I have something in car audio / visual (there is a lot of fun) and decided to change my radio has a Ford aftermarket.

We do not really know what we got in, until we, the old deck. The 'ol Junker now (not really a gentleman, because it is an EATC temperature control module with a CD player connected) has been a great board. The thing looked so out-of-date, that man would have walked the moon with it ( produced in1974).

We have the deck, bought an aftermarket dash kit from the local car audio dealer, and connected the new platform. That part was easy - but the wiring of the backup EATC (Electronic Automatic Temperature Control) was worse, then you are stuck in the eye with a hot poker.

Here's a tip for anyone who wants to replace their stock radios - never cut the harnesses. That being said, for more wiring for the animal, that really worked was almost impossible.None of the wiring diagrams from each site were of merit - and Ford has not, that could be a help for us.

Moreover, that have purchased the aftermarket dash kit, we had no buttons - they expected us to provide those from the last heating - and nothing to the controls in the plug. We could order the buttons - $ 12 each - the switch - etc. The harness was $ 80, the switches have been around $ 100 for all three ... the total cost for fixing this would be heating systemalways in the vicinity of $ 500 if you assume the cost of aftermarket kits and dash.

In fact, the remote lets you operate every function (save changing a disc) without having to dig the unit out of your backpack or its carrying case (included, but frail), and it also includes a hold switch that prevents accidental playback.

After the WMA-disc success, we switched over to an MP3 compilation made by a friend. While reading the different ID3 tags (MP3 file markers that feed song, artist, and album names to your player), we first played the songs whose titles intrigued us most, like "Nannari to Naru Deshou" by the excellent Japanese female duo Puffy. That's why ID3 tags are so cool--they allow you to search by name, not track number.

Next, we took the SlimX out on a long walk to judge its portability. Unless we made silly, Pete Townshend-style windmill movements, each disc played satisfactorily. We noticed that standard audio CDs popped more than anything we burned off the Web, which was strange. We also sampled the five equalizer presets, although we noticed only subtle differences in sound at low volumes.

While listening to any Web-audio disc, the SlimX fills up its antiskip buffer with the eight minutes of music. Essentially, this means the player doesn't have to read the disc as much, which results in prolonged battery life, and ultimately the SlimX delivered on its promise of up to 23 hours playing time. To get these results for yourself, just make sure the two flat NiMH batteries are fully charged, and pop an extra pair of AAs into the external battery pod. It's that easy.

The Sony D-NE300 is a stylish, compact portable CD player with a robust set of features. We found much to like and little to complain about in this capable unit.

Features
The D-NE300's simple controls allowed us to find our way around the unit's features with little fuss. The two-line dot matrix display was especially handy for viewing the names of our MP3 and ATRAC3plus tracks. Sony's G-Protection feature can be programmed to offer two levels of protection from stutters and skips when the unit is jarred or shaken. Even on the lowest level of protection, we found that only the hardest knocks could make our music miss a stride. We also liked the intelligently designed equalization features of the D-NE300. Equalizer presets called "soft," "active" and "heavy" are built in, or you can set your own levels in the low, mid and high ranges via a nifty graphical interface.

Sound Quality
In short, we were impressed. We popped in an MP3 CD and within 10 seconds the unit recognized the playlists and song titles we'd burned onto the disc. The unit delivered rich bass and clear highs, especially when we used the "heavy" equalization setting. We noticed some degradation in sound quality when listening via the included headphones at high volumes. We found the Sennheiser PX 100 Headphones to be a worthwhile upgrade.

Battery Life
It would be nice if the D-NE300 shipped with rechargeable batteries, but Sony claims that the D-NE300 can squeeze up to 85 hours of battery life out of two standard AA batteries (not included). If accurate, this is an amazing feat, and although we didn't test the unit for 85 hours, we did note that battery strength was still full after a full day of testing. According to Sony, the D-NE300 is equipped with advanced digital signal processing that helps it pull a lot less juice than its predecessors. The unit's display has no backlight and it sleeps after a period of inactivity, further contributing to battery life.

ATRAC3plus, MP3 and SonicStage
The D-NE300 ships with Sony's own SonicStage software, which is designed to convert your MP3s and audio CDs to Sony's proprietary ATRAC3plus music format. There are advantages and disadvantages to using SonicStage and ATRAC3plus encoding. On the plus side, ATRAC3plus offers a very good compression ratio of approximately 1/20, meaning it can compress CD-quality audio to a twentieth of its original size. This allows you to encode up to 490 songs, burn them to CD and then play them in your D-NE300. MP3 encoding, on the other hand offers about half as much compression, which means your CDs won't be able to hold as many songs when encoded in this format.

The downside to ATRAC3plus is that once your music is encoded in this format, your CDs must be played on an ATRAC3plus-compatible device, which means you are stuck with Sony branded CD players with ATRAC3plus support. MP3 formats, on the other hand, offer complete compatibility with all CD players that support MP3 CD playback. Adding to our grumbles, we found the SonicStage software somewhat lacking. The user interface was confusing and encoding both our audio CDs and MP3s to ATRAC3plus was slower than we would have liked.

Fortunately, the D-NE300 supports ATRAC3plus and MP3 formats, so if you want to cram a ton of songs onto one CD you can use SonicStage and burn ATRAC3plus CDs. Meanwhile, if you want to enjoy the universality of MP3 CDs, you can use third-party MP3 encoding and burning utilities.
